R. Siva Kumar

Session brief- The presentation will introduce the viewers to some of the more important murals and monumental sculptures in Santiniketan and discuss such issues as their purpose, pedagogic role, aesthetic quality and broad historic development. It will also touch upon some of the major contributors to this practice.

Speaker’s bio- Born in Kerala in 1956 and educated in Kerala and Santiniketan, R. Siva Kumar, is a professor of Art History at Visva Bharati in Santiniketan. He is a noted art historian, curator and the author of over 20 books. With his research on the artists of Bengal, the Santiniketan masters and major Indian artists associated with Santiniketan he has both extensively remapped an important trajectory in Modern Indian art and impacted its discourse. His important books include: The Santiniketan Murals (1995), Santiniketan: The Making of a Contextual Modernism(1997), K.G. Subramanyan: A Retrospective (2003), A Ramachandran: A Retrospective in 2 vols. ( 2004), Paintings of Abanindranath Tagore (2008), Rabindra Chitravali in 4 vols. (2011), The Last Harvest: Paintings of Rabindranath Tagore (2011), Ramkinkar Baij (2012), A. Ramachandran: Life and Art in Lines in 2 Vols (2014), and Enchantment and Engagement: The Murals of K. G. Subramanyan (2015). He has also curated several seminal exhibitions including the Santiniketan: The Making of a Contextual Modernism, the retrospective of K. G. Subramanyan, the centenary retrospective of Benodebehari Mukherjee and The Last Harvest: Paintings of Rabindranth and A Ramachandran: A Retrospective of Paintings, Sculpture, Drawings and Graphics 1964-2016. The Last Harvest was exhibited at Berlin, Paris, Rome, New York, Chicago, London, Seoul, Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bangalore between September 2011 and September 2013 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
