Imaginarium
Explores the diverse concerns of ten talented artists presently in their post graduation final year in various art colleges in Bengal.
April 13 - May 8, 2021

EA – Locus in Focus presents Imaginarium, its first Open Call exhibition featuring the recent work of Poojan Gupta, Enjamul Islam, Akshay Maity, Tufan Pramanik, Pathik Sahoo, Amar Deashi, Santanu Debnath, Gayatri Halder, Deepak Poulose and Skarma Sonam Tashi, the ten selected young artists who are presently doing their Master’s in various art colleges in Bengal. EA – Locus in Focus, a series of programs that engages with the region through exhibitions, seminars, events, workshops, publications and more, hopes to encourage critical practices and strategic and constructive collaboration encompassing a wide range of possibilities. The purpose of the exhibition is to provide a professional platform for the young artists to launch their career and also to create a dialogue between different approaches and ideas of contemporary art, in which the local communities - place, people and imagination –  play the vital roles.

The artworks on display show a wide range of materials and approaches, exploring diverse concerns, the relationship between the aesthetic and quotidian in our everyday life. Poojan Gupta’s work is a case in point, revealing the art’s mnemonic and sensory connections to familiar objects and visual experiences. There is a theatricality in her highly formalist approach, an emphasis on the situation and lived experience rather than universal values of art. Amar Deashi’s bold, highly colourful paintings are rich in fantasy and satire. The village life is central to Santanu Debnath’s paintings. Instead of representing the village as a distant, languid, romantic place, he rather depicts it as the fragments of everyday rural narratives characterized by community life and closeness to nature, as well as loneliness, sensuality and humour. Gayatri Halder’s work was inspired by the lockdown episode. The delicate designs created by piercing the papers with needles show her feminism and the subtlety of her craftsmanship. Tufan Pramanik’s lonesome, melancholic urbanism both contrasts and complements Deepak Poulose's detailed, imaginary and vibrant canvases. The three-dimensional work of Pathik Sahoo and Skarma Sonam Tashi show their playful imagination and skills in handling unconventional materials. The two sculptors in the show, Akshay Maity and Injamul Islam, are more different than similar. Although both of them are highly skilled, Injamul’s complex figuration and narrative approach stand in sharp contrast to Akshay’s relatively simpler, formal approach to sculpture.

The exhibition is not solely concerned with the present, the current discourse and the situation of the art world. A space of spectacle and dialogue, it invites us to see not only what has been achieved and accomplished so far, but also what is imminent in many artworks as hopes and possibilities.
