This symposium investigates Lalit Mohan Sen as a versatile artist, focusing on the various aspects of his creative life. It is also a way of paying tribute to the forgotten master who was born in the month of November 1898. We have four renowned speakers with us – prof R Siva Kumar, Prof Swati Bhattacharya, Mr Anubrata Chakrabarti and Prof Pinaki De. Noted art historian, Debdutta Gupta moderates the sessions.
 
About the speakers:
 
Prof Debdutta Gupta (Moderator)
Professor, St Xavier's College 
Born in 1969, Debdutta has been gifted with an innate inclination to the arts. He studied Art History at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, graduating in 1994. He worked as Chief Coordinator, (PUJO PROJECT), Lalit Kala Akademi, Government of India (2013-2015). Debdutta is a respected art historian with knowledge in all the disciplines of art. Currently the Assistant Professor of Art History at St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata, Debdutta has substantial research work behind him and has been a regular contributor to academic journals in India and abroad. His major curated shows are Unraveling a Modern Master: The Art of Lalit Mohan Sen at Victoria Memorial Hall, 2014; Works by Manindra Bhusan Gupta at Akar Prakar,2014; Bangla Cartoon, Maya Art Space, 2014; Works by Ramkinkar Baij at AkarPrakar,2013; Works by Benodebehari Mukherjee, AkarPrakar,2012; Postcards by Nandalal Bose at Akar Prakar,2011 and Tagore Triad at Akar Prakar. His major publications are- KhuddurJatra Aban Thakurer chhobi katakutir ajob Duniya, Paye hete Kolkata, Kolkatar Police, Ek Koli Kolkata Shohor Sutra, Monographs on LalitmohanSen, Dhirendranath Brahma etc.
 
Mr Anubrata Chakrabarti/ Technologist at TCG CREST
Anubrata Chakrabarti is a trained technologist who has an avid interest in art and cinema. He currently serves in the leadership group of TCG Centres for Research and Education in Science and Technology (TCG CREST). He is an established author and contributes regularly to leading magazines, journals and newspapers. He was also a key member of the team which did a unique digital project on the Kheror Khata (film book) by Satyajit Ray for his film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne.
 

 

Prof Swati Bhattacharya/ Associate Professor, Government School of Art and Craft
Dr Swati Bhattacharya is an Associate Professor at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. She is a researcher, writer, and translator, who did both her master’s and PhD in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She has been lecturing on Indian Art and Aesthetics at many reputed institutions like Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Rajya Charukala Parisad, and Birla Academy of Art & Culture. She has contributed her writing to many journals and taught at many universities and colleges as a guest professor. 
 
Prof R Siva Kumar/ Art historian
Born in Kerala in 1956 and educated in Kerala and Santiniketan, R. Siva Kumar is an art historian, curator and the author of over 18 books. His notable books include The Santiniketan Murals (1995) and Santiniketan: The Making of a Contextual Modernism (1997), A. Ramachandran: A Retrospective in two volumes (2004), Paintings of Abanindranath Tagore (2008), Rabindra Chitravali, a comprehensive four-volume compilation of Rabindranath Tagore’s paintings (2011) and Enchantment and Engagement: The Murals of K. G. Subramanyan (2015). He has also curated several seminal exhibitions, including Santiniketan: The Making a Contextual Modernism, K. G. Subramanyan: A Retrospective, Benodebehari: A Centenary Retrospective (co-curated with Gulam Mohammed Sheikh), The Last Harvest: Paintings of Rabindranath Tagore, which travelled to nine museums across the world and four museums in India, and four major exhibitions of A. Ramachandran, including two retrospectives.
 
Prof Pinaki De
Professor, Peary Mohan College and book designer 
Pinaki De is a graphic illustrator-designer who regularly works for renowned publishers across the world. He is the winner of the Publishing Next prize for the best book cover design in India twice in 2017 and 2019. His book cover for "Kalkatta" by Kunal Basu won the prestigious Oxford Bookstore Prize for the best cover design in India at Jaipur Literary Fest 2017. A member of The Society for the Preservation of Satyajit Ray Archives, he has worked extensively on Satyajit Ray's archival manuscripts. He is also the designer of important books in the Ray canon - The Pather Panchali Sketchbook (2016, HarperCollins), Travails with the Alien (2018, Harper Collins), and 3 Rays (2021, Penguin). He has been invited to speak at many seminars and symposiums, most recently at the Design Histories Seminar organized by Emami Art. Pinaki juggles his creative work with academics as he has a day job as an Associate Professor at Raja Peary Mohan College, Uttarpara.
