Emami Art and Kolkata Centre for Creativity present মাটির ছবি, মাটির গান -- a folk music performance featuring dotara player and trainer Subhabrata Sen and theatrician and folk music practitioner Ruchira Mukherjee with percussionist Dipanjon Kanji as a closing programme under the ongoing group exhibition An Ancient Ballad at Emami Art. 

 

Join us as we musically navigate the abundant aquatic life in Ajit Kumar Das’s works, the lush forests in Arunima Choudhury’s paintings, the indigenous people amidst nature in Lalit Mohan Sen’s photographs, and the mustard fields of Santinketan and the pine trees of North Bengal in Raja Boro’s woodcuts.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

 

Subhabrata Sen is a professional dotara player, trainer, and founder of Dotarian. For the last 10 years, Dotarian has been researching Baul and folk music of Bengal, and running an academy training students across the world. A performer at festivals in India and abroad, Subhabrata has shared the stage with Parvathy Baul in The Baul Ensemble performing internationally. He has performed at BOZAR, Brussels; a music festival at Evora, Portugal; Viswa Rang – Bhopal Literary Festival in Mauritius and Bhopal; Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa; Ganga Sagar Mela; Bishnupur Mela; Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet, Bangladesh; and on Doordarshan, and has played background scores for films in India and abroad. He is also a designer-instrumentalist, known for evolving a lighter, more versatile modern dotara. In 2026, he will embark on a month-long musical tour of Europe, starting in Germany. 

 

Ruchira Mukherjee is an educator, theatrician, storyteller, and folk music practitioner whose work spans various forms of Bengal folk and Goalpariya music from Assam, with a focus on meyeder gaan or songs of women. She is passionate about working with children and holds central to belief that music is a powerful tool to make education more accessible. Trained under Sri Purabi Bhattacharya and the late Sri Jolly Bagchi  direct disciples of renowned folk singer and activist the late Sri Kali Dasgupta, Ruchira has been learning dotara under noted artist Sri Subhabrata Sen for over 5 years. She has performed folk music at Kolkata Centre for Creativity, AMI Arts Festival, Rabindra Okakura Bhavan, Indian Museum Kolkata, Malwa Mahila Kabir Yatra in Bhopal, and other major platforms. 

 

Dipanjon Kanji is a Kolkata-based percussionist with a Masters from Rabindra Bharati University. With 11 years of experience across folk, contemporary, and western rhythms, he brings a versatile voice to the drum. Dipanjon has performed at Viswa Rang in 2025- Bhopal Literary Festival and across major stages in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Mumbai, collaborating with folk artists, contemporary ensembles, and fusion projects. Known for his rhythmic depth and cross-genre range, Dipanjon crafts sound that connects tradition with today.
