চল রাস্তায়: A mark-making workshop through North Kolkata : Inspired by Suman Dey’s practice and facilitated by Priyanka Lodh

9 May 2026

Date: Saturday, 9 May 2026

Time: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Starting point: Minerva Theatre, Kolkata

Recommended age: Anyone over 16 years of age

Suman Dey’s paintings at his ongoing solo are an ode to the sacred act of noticing. Taking inspiration from his documentation of Kolkata, this workshop aims to explore mark-making with ink, charcoal, and graphite as a way of observing and recording the physical memory of the city.

This exercise is rooted in the idea that understanding the present requires an awareness of history. Kolkata carries layered narratives of power, colonial influence, and transformation. Through collective tracing, participants will map fragments of a specific time zone, creating a shared, evolving architectural cartography.

As a public-facing programme under Suman Dey’s solo Chance Remains of Another Time on view till 9 May 2026 at Emami Art, we offer a rich opportunity to walk through and engage with the textures, surfaces, and architectural details of one of the oldest parts of Kolkata, led by printmaker Priyanka Lodh, much of whose own work as a visual storyteller is influenced by the lanes and buildings of North Kolkata.

Workshop Structure:

  • Introduction: Start in front of Minerva Theatre with an introduction to Suman Dey’s works in relation to the city

  • The tracing process: Move through the surrounding area together to trace and collect marks directly from old buildings and architectural structures

  • Discussion and reflection: Return to Minerva Theatre and assemble the works together, concluding with a discussion on the larger story of the city

Participants are required to carry the following:

  1. A sketchbook

  2. A clipboard (optional)

  3. Pencil, eraser

  4. A rag to wipe their hands
