About the Exhibition
Emami Art presents PURVAI: Printmaking in Eastern India - Pedagogy to Practice, a group exhibition curated by artist, academician, curator, researcher, and writer Dr Paula Sengupta that traces the curve of contemporary printmaking across Eastern India from the pedagogical space to the realm of practice – featuring 43 artists from the Northeastern states, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
With Bengal as the pivotal point from which modern/contemporary printmaking in the region is traced, the exhibition examines the institutional and artistic nurturing of the medium from the late-20th century onwards. PURVAI maps the role of art institutions in fostering printmaking in Eastern India, where infrastructural needs have kept the medium closely tied to pedagogy. By bringing together both regional practitioners and artists connected through practice, PURVAI underscores Eastern India’s vibrant, experimental, and evolving printmaking ecosystem—one that has indelibly shaped India’s artistic modernity and will continue to contribute to global contemporary art.
This is a collateral exhibition to the 3rd Print Biennale India organised by Lalit Kala Akademi.

Quotes
“It’s an honour to have Dr Paula Sengupta curate an exhibition on printmaking at Emami Art spanning the Eastern and Northeastern states of India, and I’m so excited for our audience to see what she and our team have so carefully assimilated over the past few months. Emami Art has always placed special emphasis on the East and Northeastern regions of India. With PURVAI, we hope to continue these conversations that have only just begun, for this landmark exhibition on contemporary printmaking will highlight how the medium has evolved since the late 20th century and continues to inspire emerging printmakers. I am grateful to all the selected artists for trusting us with their exemplary works, and to Lalit Kala Akademi for collaborating with us for this exhibition.”
Richa Agarwal
CEO, Emami Art and Chairperson, Kolkata Centre for Creativity
“PURVAI began with a conversation between Dr Paula Sengupta and me – to put forward an exhibition focusing solely on printmaking practices in East and Northeast India. Medium-specific exhibitions are not a new concept at Emami Art for we constantly strive to focus on practices that tend to go under the radar. PURVAI is to be a one-of-a-kind exhibition on contemporary printmaking and its expanded practices; and we hope to create a platform for emerging talent in this field alongside established printmaker-pedagogues who have contributed largely to the evolution and nurturing of this medium as well as its faithful practitioners. This collateral exhibition under the purview of 3rd Print Biennale India by Lalit Kala Akademi will urge its visitors to delve into the diversity of artistic language and approach.”
Ushmita Sahu
Director and Head Curator, Emami Art
“In keeping with Emami Art's mandate of building focus on Eastern India, this curatorial project includes the development and practice of modern and contemporary printmaking in the Northeastern states, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh from the late-20th century onwards. With Bengal as the pivotal point, delve into the institutional and artistic nurturing of the medium and map the role of art institutions in fostering printmaking in Eastern India, where infrastructural needs have kept the medium closely tied to pedagogy. We have foregrounded faculty and alumni who have sustained, transformed, and expanded printmaking practice, and have also focused on expanded practices such as bookmaking, graphic narratives, papermaking, textile-based approaches, digital and photographic processes, moving image, and sculptural extensions – in a wonderful celebration of Eastern India’s vibrant evolving printmaking ecosystem.”

About Emami Art
Emami Art is a prominent contemporary art gallery and cultural production space located on the ground floor of the Kolkata Centre for Creativity’s Green Building. Established in 2017, it adopts a forward-looking, multi-dimensional approach that reflects South Asia's history, socio-cultural, and geo-political narratives. Emami Art operates within an inclusive framework where profitability supports sustainable resource regeneration and public service.
The gallery features a dynamic program of curated exhibitions, ranging from large-scale presentations to more intimate displays. It actively participates in both national and international events and art fairs. Emami Art represents a wide spectrum of contemporary artists, including emerging, mid-career, and established talents, with a special emphasis on the East and North Eastern regions of India. Several of its artists’ works are featured in prominent national and international collections, including public foundations and museums. A key initiative is the annual Emami Art Experimental Film Festival, which provides a platform for alternative and experimental filmmaking, video art, and moving image practices. This festival brings together internationally acclaimed artists and filmmakers alongside recent critical productions from India.
Through short- and long-term projects, Emami Art supports the local and regional arts community by offering regular mentorship programs, workshops, residency opportunities, and innovative educational activities. These initiatives foster artistic development, build collaborative networks, and provide a supportive environment for emerging talent. The gallery also organizes regular talks, seminars, panel discussions, and conversations with artists, curators, and key partners, creating a space for critical engagement. Committed to promoting a regional, national, and international agenda, Emami Art emphasizes community engagement, socially relevant initiatives, and institutional partnerships. With a multi-year vision for the future, it continues to be a catalyst for change, research, innovation, and inclusivity.
