Chance Remains of Another Time : Suman Dey

20 March - 9 May 2026

Title: Suman Dey | Chance Remains of Another Time

Date: 20 March – May 2026

Place: Gallery 1, Ground Floor, Emami Art

Overview

Emami Art is pleased to present Chance Remains of Another Timean exhibition of new and recent paintings by Suman Dey, opening on March 20, 2026. This is Dey’s second solo, after his first solo presentation at the gallery in 2023.

This exhibition is a meditation on the passage of time. Pouring forth from an artist who has lived in a city all his life, the paintings featured in this exhibition gather his ordinary everyday experiences in urbanity and weave them into something extraordinary. In pursuit of documenting the memories and traces left by his interactions with certain physical spaces and natural forms, a new format emerges in the polyptych works presented for the first time in this exhibition. By arranging smaller, fragmented parts to make a whole, Dey welds together diverse, heterogeneous elements – images, sights, signs, and emotions -- within a single artwork. This act of amalgamation mirrors the fragmentation of both city structure and urban memory owing to rapid and relentless expansion. With this, he holds together notions of celebration and decay, memory and loss, all at the same time.

Quotes

"We are delighted to present Chance Remains of Another Time, a solo exhibition by Suman Dey, a leading painter from Bengal, on March 20, 2026. This marks his second solo exhibition at our gallery. In 2023, we presented a large body of his expansive canvases, works for which he is widely known. This exhibition moves in a different direction. It signals a quiet but decisive shift in his practice, both in format and approach. I believe that art lovers will find new explorations novel and exciting.”

Three years after we presented Suman Dey’s first solo comes his second. This time the focus has shifted from his personal memories and anecdotes to the varied sights, signs, marks, and changes he notices in his everyday life as an artist who has lived all his life in a city. The new polyptych works are bold and assured. Colour plays the role of structure. These recent explorations reveal how abstraction, in his hands, captures the grace, rhythm, and elemental beauty of natural forms and landscapes. We are delighted to present Suman Dey’s recent body of works that celebrate and critique the urban existence.
